Heatwaves Are Worse Because of Fossil Fuel Emissions
Heatwaves are not new, but the heat surrounding them is. When people ask whether a specific heatwave was “caused by climate change,” they often miss the more important point: heatwaves already happen naturally, but fossil fuel emissions are making them hotter and more frequent, intense and dangerous. That shift matters because it changes how we understand risk, responsibility, and what must happen next.
Heatwaves Happen, Fossil Fuels Make Them Worse
Heatwaves have always been part of the natural weather system. They usually form when high-pressure systems linger over a region, trapping warm air and allowing temperatures to build over days. That means climate change did not invent heatwaves, just as it did not create famous hot summers from the past.
What has changed is the background climate in which these events now occur. The atmosphere today contains much more heat-trapping greenhouse gas than it did a century ago, mostly because of burning coal, oil, and gas. As a result, when a heatwave develops now, it starts from a warmer baseline and can push temperatures to more dangerous extremes.
Scientists describe this through attribution science, which examines how climate change influences specific weather events. Research shows that if the weather pattern behind the 1976 UK heatwave happened in today’s climate, peak temperatures would likely be around 3–4°C higher. In other words, the weather setup may be similar, but the fossil fuel-loaded atmosphere makes the outcome far worse.
The Real Question Is Why Extreme Heat Is Rising
The better question is not whether climate change caused a heatwave, but why extreme heat is becoming more severe and more frequent. The answer is straightforward: greenhouse gases from fossil fuel emissions are building up in the atmosphere and trapping more heat. That extra heat shifts the odds, making record-breaking temperatures more likely and raising the damage done to people, infrastructure, and ecosystems.
This is why saying only “human-caused climate change” can sometimes blur the real mechanism. The phrase is correct, but it can make the issue feel vague or overly focused on individual behaviour alone. In reality, the biggest driver is fossil fuels, which are responsible for roughly three-quarters of global greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 90% of carbon dioxide emissions.
Individual choices still matter, but they are not the beginning of the story. Public attention has often been steered toward personal carbon footprints, while the larger challenge is transforming the energy systems that rely on coal, oil, and gas. Recycling, driving less, or taking shorter showers can help, but they cannot replace the urgent need to decarbonise electricity, transport, industry, and heating if we want future heatwaves to become less deadly.
Heatwaves are a natural feature of weather, but the reason they are now more dangerous is human-made and specific: fossil fuel emissions. Every tonne of carbon dioxide added to the atmosphere increases the chance that hot weather will become extreme weather. If we want to limit even worse heat in the future, the public conversation must move beyond asking the wrong question and focus on cutting fossil fuel emissions while preparing communities for the hotter world already here.
